A new taskforce of 11 organisations has been put in place to help shift the attitudes in working with children and animals at Petra’s historic monuments.
Equine welfare charity the Brooke has launched the Care for Petra campaign that encourages tourists to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site by foot as donkeys usually involved in transportation are often injured or weak.
It also asks them not to buy from children, as it is thought this will encourage them to stay in school and to also not stand or climb on the monuments to help preservation.
Campaign coordinator Jennifer Titmuss said: “Protecting Petra’s heritage, securing the future of children, and improving the welfare of working animals requires a collective effort by authorities, communities and tourists alike. This campaign calls upon tourists to play their part by making the right choices, and thinking before they act, buy or ride within the park.”
The campaign will be highly visible at the site itself showing an animated video and posters, while tour operators and cruise lines are being informed.
The Brooke has worked in Petra since 1988 but has been involved in other measures including creating The Happy Horses Holiday Code in 2010 and advising on ABTA’s Code for Animals in Tourism in 2013.
