Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board, Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya, has urged the government, Climate Change Conference organisers and the tourist industry to anticipate an overload of visitors to the island, according to a Kompas report.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held December 3-14, with pre-conference meetings by NGOs and experts from late November, must be organised successfully, said Ida Bagus. The UN meet is expected to draw some 10,000 delegates.
“If, say, only 7,000 delegates will attend, Bali will already be overstretched” he was quoted saying.
This will be the first time that Bali has hosted such a large number of convention delegates. The previous high was around 5,000. Bali Update said the island has 50,000 rooms with additional rooms in outlying resorts.
Most hotels have been blocked in the resorts of Nusa Dua, Kuta and Sanur.
Seat availability on Bali-bound flights may also prove a problem. Currently, 5,000-6,000 visitors arrive daily.
