It has been confirmed that passengers on a shore excursion with Celebrity Cruises have been robbed at gunpoint in Saint Lucia.
The incident, which took place on Friday (12 April), involved masked gunman and resulted in 55 people being robbed. The cruise was on the Celebrity Eclipse and included guests who were travelling to the “Breathtaking Soufriere and Warm Mineral Baths” and “Land and Sea to the Pitons” excursions on the same bus.
ABC News in the US quoted Saint Lucia’s tourism minister Lorne Theophilus as saying it was an “unfortunate and horrible scenario”.
A statement released by Celebrity Cruises to Cruise News said the passengers, and two crew members, returned to the ship unharmed and had been contacted by its Guest Care Team for assistance if necessary. Local police are currently investigating the incident.
Celebrity’s statement continued:
“We are thankful that none of our guests were injured in this unfortunate event, and will continue to provide them any support they may need. A vacation is supposed to be filled with fun, rejuvenation and relaxation. An act of crime should not be part of any vacation, and we regret our guests had to experience those events.
“The safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew members is always our top priority. We will closely monitor the safety situation in St. Lucia, and work closely with law enforcement and government officials, which are taking steps to ensure the safety of everyone in St. Lucia, including visitors.”
Celebrity Eclipse is currently sailing at 14-night Caribbean cruise that departed Fort Lauderdale on 6 April and will continue from St Lucia onto Bridgetown, Barbados; St. George’s, Grenada; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Willemstad, Curacao to finish in Fort Lauderdale this Saturday (20 April).
