A magical, mysterious land, Myanmar is arguably the most exciting emerging travel destination in the world today. Since opening its doors to the international community, the country is now experiencing a surge in tourists, all wanting to discover what previously lay behind closed doors.
And seeing the vast potential this alluring country has to offer, Best Western recently unveiled a new hotel in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, which brings a new tier of midscale comfort and international standards to this eclectic destination.
Located off a leafy street that leads to Kandawgyi Park – the green lungs of Yangon – BEST WESTERN Green Hill Hotel represent the modern face of the city’s hospitality scene. Having only been built in late 2012, it is not surprising that the hotel feels fresh and modern. But it has also been designed in such a way that makes the best use of its surroundings.
Away from Yangon’s bustling and often choked city streets, the hotel gives an impression of being bright and spacious. The large, open-plan lobby merges into an equally large restaurant, which is flanked on one side by floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing natural light to stream in.
The hotel offers a total of 189 rooms, which are appointed in a similarly spacious manner. Despite the fact this is marketed as a midscale hotel, the accommodation feels one tier above, with wooden floors, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, work desks, tea and coffee making facilities, and, like all Best Western hotels, complimentary Wi-Fi.
And due to the hotel’s elevated position, all guest rooms feature excellent views across Yangon’s low-rise cityscape, with many capturing the stunning golden spires of the Shwedagon Pagoda.
Being part of Best Western’s classic three-star hotel collection, the range of facilities at the BEST WESTERN Green Hill Hotel is somewhat limited. For example, guests should not expect to spend their days lounging around a swimming pool or indulging in a spa treatment. But what the hotel does, it does well.
Breakfast is free and offers a plentiful array of Asian and international dishes, plus live egg and noodle stations. Taxis are readily available and service always comes with a smile.
In a city where hotel rates are rising rapidly, fuelled by strong demand and a lack of room supply, the combination of a modern development and Best Western’s international standards is certainly a welcome addition to Yangon’s hotel scene. Spacious, affordable and well connected – both in terms of technology and transport – BEST WESTERN Green Hill Hotel is ideal for travellers who want a comfortable place to rest their head after a day exploring the city.
There is no doubt that demand for travel to Yangon will continue to rise in future, and in a city still finding its feet in tourism terms, it is reassuring for travellers to have a respected and established hotel brand like Best Western to rely on.
