Monthip said the department had measured noise levels at eight regional airports - including Chiang Mai, Phuket and Khon Kaen – and found that many residents lived in noisehazard zones with sound levels reaching 65 decibels. Noise problems were most severe at airports with more than 64 flights taking off and landing each day, or about 20,000 flights a year, the report said.
“The number of flights taking off and landing at these regional airports has rapidly increased with the jump in low-cost airline services. This will increase noise in nearby communities,” said the department chief. “The problem is that our country has no law on airport landuse management. Inappropriate land use in the vicinity of airports has led to a flood of complaints about airport operations,” she said.
Monthip said some households near Chiang Mai airport had already worked out home modification arrangements with Airports of Thailand (AoT) to minimise the effects of noise. However, the situation was worrying in Phuket, she was quoted saying. There, community and residential developments had been built close to the runways.
According to AoT, Phuket International airport has about 70 flights per day, or about 25,500 flights a year. Chiang Mai International airport has about 64 flights a day, or over 23,300 flights a year.
