Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has unveiled a modern take on the usually dull and dreary passenger screening area.
In collaboration with SpringHill Suites by Marriott, the airport has transformed the security area in Terminal 1 into a bright space complete with sofas and TVs.
Rosemarie S. Andolino, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, said the new space was designed to incorporate “passenger amenities while maintaining a safe and secure travel environment”.
“The SpringHill Suites concept is a unique way to improve the screening process for travellers,” said Ms Andolino. “These efforts fit perfectly with the mayor’s goal to increase the number of visitors to Chicago to 55 million by 2020. He recognises the tremendous power of travel and tourism to grow our economy and create new jobs.”
The security area offers hotel lobby-style furniture including sofas, plus artworks, soft lighting, soothing music and a video wall for entertainment. Visitors will be able to relax in lounge seating before entering the security checkpoint, and while waiting in for their belongings in the post-screening area.
SpringHill Suites said it would also participate in a series of “surprises and giveaways”.
