April 7, 2010, Taipei, Taiwan - China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines today signed a memorandum of cooperation whereby the two airlines will represent each other’s businesses in their respective markets, in passenger, cargo, maintenance, and ground handling operations.
The memorandum was signed by Mr. Huang-Hsiang Sun, President of China Airlines, and Mr. Xu-Lun MA, Executive Director President of China Eastern Airlines Company Limited. Both carriers will continue to revise their operations based on the new agreement, which creates a win-win situation for passengers who travel across the strait by providing more efficient and convenient service.
Even before signing the new memorandum, China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines already had a strong partnership, and worked together on inter-line check-in, passenger baggage check-through, mileage program partnerships, flight attendant interchange program, and inter-line ticket issuing. The two carriers also cooperate to enhance cargo service by Special Cargo Prorate Agreement and Cargo Space Swap Agreement.
Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines operates more than 330 aircraft, including passenger and cargo planes. It has an extensive domestic network in Mainland China, and serves 151 international destinations. China Eastern has won the International Air Transport Association’s Annual Laureate Award and 10-Year Cordial Service Award, and was named official carrier of the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
China Airlines operates the island’s most extensive and highly regarded network of international passenger and cargo services. The new memorandum will be beneficial to both airlines, as it will expand their global air networks, increase passenger and freight load factors, reduce staff and operating costs, and uplift both competitiveness in the worldwide air travel market.
