China Airlines (CAL) has reported a net loss of TWD32.4 billion (US$971.8 million) for the full-year 2008, according to a Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation report. The Taiwan-based carrier has blamed a 45% rise on fuel costs for the poor results.
Nevertheless, CAL is reportedly optimistic about 2009, given the lower fuel prices, the success of direct links with mainland China, and its continuous cost saving efforts. China Airlines also expects more direct flights to result from upcoming cross-strait talks in the near future.
