The Chinese city of Chongqing has begun constructing a museum for a series of centuries-old, UNESCO World Heritage-listed rock carvings. The planned Dazu Rock Carvings Museum in Chongqing’s Dazu county covers 6.6 hectares and will cost CNY290 million (US$44 million), Xinhua reported the local government saying. Dazu is home to more than 50,000 individual rock carvings located in a series of caves, which date back as far as the ninth century AD. They were placed on the UNESCO list in 1999.
