Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines plans to invest CNY15 billion (US$2.2 billion) in adding about 20 planes to the Beijing market within three years, according to a Shanghai Daily report. The carrier’s Beijing unit will run a total of 50 aircraft within three years, with nine to be introduced later this year.
“We are aiming to boost our market share in Beijing to 20% within five years from the current 13%,” China Eastern’s Chairman, Liu Shaoyong, was quoted saying. “We are applying for more flights in Beijing now,” he added. The carrier currently operates 32 direct flights to Beijing, delivering 7.1 million passengers last year.
Liu said that his airline’s potential merger with Shanghai Airlines will contribute towards expanding its Beijing market share. Shanghai Airlines currently holds 5% of the Beijing market. He added that details of the merger plan are expected to be published next week.
