China is aiming to capitalise on rising demand for domestic forest tourism, Xinhua reports.
The news agency cited the country’s State Forestry Administration as saying that it has seen rapid growth in forest tourism in recent years, with 910 million trips to China’s woodland areas in 2014 – approximately a quarter of total domestic trips.
This drove revenue of CNY650 billion (US$103bn), or one fifth of the country’s domestic tourism earnings. The announcement was made at the opening of a forestry tourism festival in Wuhan.
China currently has more than 8,500 forest tourism sites and is now planning to develop new opportunities for tourism without damaging the natural landscape.
Forests are thought to be popular among Chinese city dwellers seeking a break from congested urban life.
