A rescue and breeding base for endangered Chinese white dolphins opened on Saturday in the southeastern coastal city of Xiamen. The base, which will initially operate for a trial period, is the first of its kind in the country. Xinhua reported officials as saying that the base will be able to accommodate up to six white dolphins at a time for basic medical treatment, rehabilitation and breeding assistance. Previously, rescuers had to return injured white dolphins back to the sea after giving them simple medical treatment.
An estimated 2,000 endangered Chinese white dolphin are thought to live in the seas around Xiamen and the Pearl River Delta in southern China.
