China plans massive national park
The Kanas Geological Park, in the remote Xinjiang region, will have its current 1,000 square kilometres expanded ten-fold by incorporating nearby tourist regions and grasslands, Xinhua news agency reported.
The result would be “the world’s largest national park,” according to Xinhua.
AFP said that claim may be challenged by authorities in Greenland, home to the 972,000-square-kilometre National Park of Northeastern Greenland, which was established in 1974.
Kanas geological park boasts a range of landscapes, including the Kanas Lake, China’s deepest alpine lake, snow-capped mountains and grassland. It may take over the slot now occupied by America’s Yellowstone National Park, which covers an area of about 9,000 square kilometres.
