The city of Urumqi, in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, is planning to attract 10 million tourists this year – 27.9% more than the 7.8 million achieved last year. Xinhua reported the Director of the city’s Tourism Bureau, Shewketi Tursun, as saying that the government expects to generate CNY7.5 billion (US$1.1 billion) of tourism receipts this year, 17.7% more than in 2010. Urumqi, which lies on the ancient Silk Road, is recovering from major race riots in 2009, which left 197 people dead.
