China has pledged to boost tourism to Taiwan to help the island shore up its ailing economy amid the global downturn, an Associated Press reports said.
To promote tourism to Taiwan, Chinese Tourism Administration Director, Shao Qiwei, was quoted saying that Chinese from 25 provinces and municipalities – up from the current 13- would soon be allowed to make the visit across the Taiwan Strait.
Shao was heading a Chinese delegation of more than 400 travel agents and tourism officials when he made the announcement.
The report said China officially lifted a ban on tourism to Taiwan after Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou took office last May.
The report said with China sanctioning tourism with Taiwan, the Ma administration had hoped an influx of Chinese tourists could boost the economy.
Some 3,000 tourists were expected daily but the number last year was only 300 a day, the report said.
Shao was quoted saying that Chinese travel agents would offer new tour packages to Taiwan, including boat cruises and theme tours.
