For the first time on the Chinese mainland, fishery officials are using SPLASH, a state-of-the-art navigation tool, to tag and track two whale sharks - the world’s largest fish. According to a Xinhua report, the two sharks were released into the ocean at Sanya, Hainan province, on Monday.
The SPLASH navigation technology includes sensors to measure depth, temperature and light levels and can provide locations within a radius of 350m.
As an officially endangered species, the fishing, selling and trading of whale sharks for commercial purposes is prohibited in China.
