The world’s biggest duty free store will be developed in the Chinese island province of Hainan.
Xinhua reported the province’s vice governor, Tan Li, as saying on Wednesday that the existing duty free complex in Sanya will be expanded from 10,000m² to 60,000m², making it the largest such facility in the world. Another duty free store in the provincial capital Haikou will be expanded from 3,650m² to 4,880m².
The announcement was made at the 2014 Boao Forum, which is taking place in Hainan this week. No timeline for the planned developments was given.
Hainan launched its duty free shopping programme in 2011, as part of the government’s strategy to turn the island into an international tourism centre, comparable to Hawaii or Bali.
