China to buy 350km/h trains

China’s Ministry of Railways has signed a deal with CNR Corporation Limited to purchase 100 high-speed CRH trains, at a cost of CNY39.2 billion (US$5.7 billion), Xinhua reported.
With a designed speed of 350km/h, the new CRH trains will be used on the Beijing-Shanghai route in 2011, when the construction of the 1,318km track is complete.
Zhang Shuguang, Director of the Ministry’s Transport Department was reported saying that “large purchases’ of CRH trains would continue in the coming years are more tracks are completed. China plans to spend CNY500 billion on trains over the next five years, the report said.
