Authorities in the southern Chinese island province of Hainan are planning to develop six uninhabited islands this year, local media has reported. The China Daily reported the head of Hainan’s Department of Ocean and Fisheries, Zhao Zhongshe as saying that that the islands would be “developed as tourist sites”. The move follows the passing of China’s national ‘Law on Island Protection’ last year, which allows for the development of uninhabited islands. Environmental groups however, have expressed concerns about the plan, saying that an influx of tourists would be detrimental to the local eco-systems.
