Chinese authorities have vowed to conduct a full investigation after a Shanghai-bound Qatar Airways flight was forced to declare an emergency due to a low-fuel incident exacerbated by the actions of a Juneyao Airlines aircraft.Flight QR-888 had departed Doha on August 13 bound for Shanghai Pudong Airport but was put into a holding pattern over the airport due to poor weather conditions. As fuel levels became low, the Boeing 777-300 aircraft was diverted to Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport.A Juneyao Airlines aircraft on approach to Hongqiao Airport was formally requested to abort its own landing to accommodate the Qatar Airways aircraft – a request the Juneyao air crew apparently refused. The Qatar Airways plane subsequently landed safely at the airport and reached its final destination – Pudong – more than nine hours behind schedule.According to local reports, Chinese authorities have vowed a full investigation, with China’s Civil Aviation Authority declaring that “verified violations will be severely dealt with according to law”.A Qatar Airways spokesperson was unavailable for comment at the time of press.
