China should open more airspace for domestic carriers to help them compete with high-speed railways, China Eastern Airlines’ Chairman, Liu Shaoyong, has said. Reported by the Shanghai Daily, Liu warned that Chinese carriers would be forced to cancel routes shorter than 500km as passenger volumes are dented by the growth of rail travel. Passenger levels on 500-800km routes are expected to decrease 20-30%, he added.
“The insufficient airspace resource, undeveloped regional air, frail innovative ability and incomplete infrastructure weaken our competitiveness,” Liu was quoted saying.
China plans to build 42 high-speed rail lines spanning 13,000km over the next three years.
