An Australian report said Chinese authorities have introduced tough measures to control the movement of foreigners, less than four months before the Beijing Olympics.
The Advertiser report said Australians trying to enter China faced a series of fresh bureaucratic barriers under a crackdown on Chinese visa requirements.
It said ordinary tourists must hand over airline tickets and hotel reservation printouts to the Government when they apply for a visa. China also has cut the amount of time visitors can spend in the country from three months to two months.
The report added that businessmen must obtain a letter from an approved Chinese government department that confirms they have bona fide commercial dealings inside China. This, the report added, was a departure from the previous requirement of a supporting letter from an executive’s company in Australia.
The changes had stunned visa applicants at consulates around Australia this week, the report said.
