Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Continental Airlines would both like to see daily flights between and Guam and Cairns, and have working towards that result over the last 18 months with Cairns Airport Pty Ltd, Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia.
In April last year Continental doubled the scheduled services between Guam and Cairns from twice to four times weekly. As well as serving the Guam market which includes personnel from the US military base, the flights connect with services from nine ports in Japan.
CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Rob Giason said the daily service from 17 March to 6 April 2010 will provide 1500 extra seats to meet increased demand to visit the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region, from both from Japan and Guam over the Easter holidays and the end of academic year holidays in Japan. The daily service is conveniently connected at Guam to and from the nine ports which Continental also services in Japan, namely Sapporo, Sendai, Niigata, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.
“With the support of our partners and the travel trade in Japan and Guam this holiday season service increase is possible” said Mr Giason “and we will continue to market with the objective of daily services as our goal.’
