Continental Airlines today became the first airline to launch a mobile boarding pass service to London’s Heathrow. The service allows customers to receive boarding passes electronically on their mobile phones or PDAs. The carrier will be the first to offer the service on nonstop flights from the UK to the US. Martin Hand, Continental’s Vice President of Reservations and eCommerce, said: “We are pleased to add Heathrow to the growing list of airports we serve with mobile boarding passes. The passes work by displaying a bar code that encrypts the passenger and flight information, which are scanned. Additionally, through their mobiles, customers can view what will be on their flight or track their flight.Continental was the first airline to offer paperless passes in the US and currently has the service in place in 42 airports. It is increasing its number of flights from Heathrow to New York and Houston, where the passes will be used.Mr Hand added: “Customers have told us this is the type of product improvement they want and we will continue to expand the self-service technology to more of our domestic and international destinations.”
