Countries caution citizens on travel to India

In the aftermath of the triple Mumbai blasts on Wednesday that killed 21, some countries have issued advisories to their citizens to exercise caution if they are travelling to India.The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said there was ongoing ‘high threat of terrorism’ throughout India after the bomb explosions.”Major cities in India remain on high alert and British nationals should exercise caution.” The latest travel advice warns that terrorists have targeted places in the past which westerners are known to visit, including restaurants, hotels, railway stations, markets, places of worship and sporting venueAustralia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said there was an elevated risk of terrorist activity by militant groups anywhere at any time, Dow Jones reported. The department was quoted saying that it continued to receive reports terrorists are planning attacks in India.Singapore’s foreign ministry issued an advisory asking its citizens there to be cautious. “Singaporeans in Mumbai or intending to travel to Mumbai are urged to take all necessary precautions for their personal safety and heed the instructions from the local authorities and monitor the local news diligently,” a foreign ministry statement said.Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs upgraded its travel alert for specific regions of India, advising people not to visit areas that have been recently attacked by terrorist bombs. An orange alert –the second highest on MOFA’s four-colour coded advisory system — was issued for New Delhi, Mumbai, and Calcutta, according to a press release. The United States and the United Nations led international condemnation of the attacks, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calling them “despicable” and vowing to visit India next week as planned, AFP reported.
