The number of trips made between mainland China and Taiwan could hit record levels by the end of the year.
The forecast came in response to recent figures released by Chinese authorities. More journeys are being made between the two states as the red tape is cut back, facilitating travel. Taiwan dropped travel barriers for mainland residents from Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen to make individual trips to the island in a trial programme.
The number of visitations made from mainland China to Taiwan hit 2.4 million in the first half of 2011. In the context of last year’s figures which recorded five million trips made from Taiwan to mainland China, the total is on course to breach to 10 million mark.
Chairman of China’s National Tourism Administration, Shao Qiwei, expressed confidence that cross straights traffic could surpass the landmark figure by the end of the year.
Speaking at a cross-strait tourism exchange conference in Chongqing. Shao said increasing mainland tourists have boosted the service sectors such as hotels, dining, and transport in Taiwan, while simultaneously creating job in other industries.
