Seven cruise ships from Carnival Australia’s global fleet will make nearly 30 calls at Queensland ports before the end of March, giving the Queensland tourism sector much needed momentum following the State’s disastrous floods.
As Queensland recovers from the flood emergency, it is a case of ‘business as usual’ for cruise ships carrying thousands of local and international passengers whose onshore spending will help boost local economies. Meanwhile P&O Cruises is also helping to raise money for the flood cause onboard its four ships.
Queensland’s cruise season activity will recommence this Saturday as P&O Cruises’ Pacific Dawn returns to her homeport of Brisbane after being diverted to Sydney for her last turnaround when flooding forced the closure of the Port of Brisbane.
Pacific Dawn’s return to Brisbane coincides with the start of her next seven-night cruise along the Queensland coast with around 2000 passengers on board. Pacific Dawn’s sister ship, Pacific Sun, will make multiple visits to Brisbane, Cairns and the Whitsundays in March as well as a scheduled call at Townsville on March 21.
Princess Cruises’ two Australian based ships, Sun Princess and Dawn Princess, will also visit Queensland ports in March while their megaliner sister ship, Diamond Princess, will call at Port Douglas in February.
Also in February, Queensland will host visits from two ships in the P&O Cruises UK fleet, Arcadia and Aurora, which, between them, will make four calls to Brisbane, Cairns and the Whitsundays.
“In the wake of the flood emergency, Australians are being encouraged to holiday in Queensland to restore the momentum of its usually vibrant tourism sector and this year’s cruise season is more important than most in terms of supporting local economies,” said Jenny Lourey, Senior Vice President of Carnival Australia, which represents P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises UK.
P&O Cruises is also giving passengers on its four ships - Pacific Dawn, Pacific Jewel, Pacific Pearl and Pacific Sun - an opportunity to contribute to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal. In January, February and March, the following fundraising arrangements are in place:
