Crystal Cruises has started complying with a new set of environmentally-friendly docking procedures at the Port of Los Angeles.
The Vessel Speed Reduction Program (VSRP) lowers the speed of vessels when sailing in and out of the port, reducing emissions. A voluntary scheme, shipping companies are invited to cut speeds as far as 40 nautical miles (74km) from shore. By doing this, Port of Los Angeles said it had cut 73 tons of diesel, 740 tons of sulphur oxide and 981 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions in 2012.
“Our Crystal Clean ethos permeates all of our operations worldwide,” said William Boehm, Crystal’s director of marine compliance. “From greener approaches to sailing, to our ‘Nothing Overboard’ policy and ‘You Care, We Care’ voluntourism programme, we are continually seeking out opportunities to reduce our ecological impact and enhance environmental stewardship wherever we sail.”
Crystal’s environmental practices have also been recognised by Venice, Stockholm and San Francisco ports.
