Sir Howard Davies has said the south east of England will need more runway capacity in the next few years as the Airports Commission continues to receive evidence into the problem.
According to the BBC, Davies said the “developing view” of the capacity issues in the south east found there was a “provisional conclusion” that extra runways would be needed for growth in the next few decades.
His commission believes regional airports cannot handle the excess demand that is to come although acknowledged the effectiveness of serving local markets.
“Our final conclusions will certainly not please everyone. I am sure about that,” he was reported saying.
Labour had approved a third runway at Heathrow but this was scraped by the coalition government when it took over in 2010. The Airport Commission has until summer 2015 to publish its full report, with proposals including expansion at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted as well as Boris Johnson’s Thames Estuary suggestion.
