The much-hyped, one of the best airports in the world, which opened its Terminal 3 with much fanfare less than a year ago, seems to be having problems. The GMR/DIAL airport at Delhi has come into media glare for what can be termed as serious security lapses, both operational and otherwise.Critics say that while millions have been spent on imported marble and other items, the boundary wall and other security-related measures leave much to be desired. It took a popular TV channel to reveal that entry into the core areas of the airport was very easy, and its reporter did it to prove the point.Interestingly, even entry into a shrine inside the complex has caused controversy, as at present every Thursday, the devotees are ushered in for prayers inside by the CISF personnel, who are charged with the responsibility of security at Delhi and most other airports. This is seen as a big security risk and lapse, as no frisking is done of these people and of workers at the site.Aerocity, the much-publicised complex near the airport housing several hotels and other infrastructure, has also come under pressure. While the airport authorities say that all permissions and regulations were complied with, security agencies say that the hotels will pose a problem of security – a key word these days – as any guest could take a hit at planes on the tarmac or flying planes. The police should have been kept in the loop, say the many critics of the ambitious project.Meanwhile, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has set up a 10-member committee to carry out security inspection of the hospitality sector and other areas in close proximity of the airport.
