Cash-strapped Delhi International Airport Ltd’s (DIAL) funds crisis appears to be worsening, The Economic Times reported. It has suggested levying INR350 (US$7) for each outbound domestic passenger compared to INR300 proposed earlier, the report said.
It has not however, suggested any increase in the levy on international passengers. Earlier, the government had asked the airport developer to cut the proposed fee, citing falling air traffic. In fact, 80% passengers flying from Delhi are domestic-bound.
“The government is yet to take a decision on the levy. Also, we will have to give notice to International Air Transport Association (IATA) and airlines once a decision is taken. Therefore, there is still some time before we start collecting the proposed airport development fee (ADF),” an unnamed DIAL official was quoted saying.
“We are still analysing DIAL’s proposal to levy ADF. The final fee amount is yet to be finalised,” an official in the Ministry of Civil Aviation was quoted as saying in the report.
The report added that DIAL had earlier said it was facing a fund crunch of over INR25 billion as the funds it expected to collect from the upcoming airport hotel project did not come.
The downturn in the global economy has now made it difficult for the airport developer to raise funds from the market.
