Delhi Metro chose the anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday to introduce a women’s only travel class to the city’s Metro system. The new scheme was introduced on Saturday whereby the first coach with a capacity of 43 seats was reserved for women, children under 12 years-old, the elderly and the disabled. According to press reports there was some confusion among passengers on the first day of operations, despite signage and the presence of a guard on all platforms to make sure the new rules were observed. By and large, the new system was welcomed by many female passengers.
