With a year still to go until the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the Indian capital is still more than 5,000 hotel rooms short of its target, The Times of India has reported. Only 3,952, or 41%, of the ‘confirmed’ 9,500 rooms are currently ready, and just 50% of the 2,194 of the ‘likely’ will be ready, according to a recent review. The ‘confirmed’ category details rooms which are certain to come up in time for the event, while the ‘likely’ rooms were those expected to be ready. The deadline for completion of these rooms had been fixed for March 2010 to give ample lead time fro bookings.
Authorities in Delhi had estimated a demand for 40,000 rooms. Of this total, 10,150 rooms were already available in Delhi and the greater National Capital Region. There were plans to construct at least 10,000 more hotel rooms. However the constraints of the global economic crisis, and other factors, have limited growth.
