The Delhi government has promulgated the Delhi Prevention of Touting and Malpractices Against Ordinance, which legally permits a jail term of one year and fine of INR10,000 to those found cheating tourists in the Capital. The move, coming in the wake of the ongoing CWG2010, is intended to protect tourists from any kind of scam at the airport, railway stations, inter-state bus terminus, hotels and sight-seeing locations. India’s tourist offices receive many complaints from tourists who have been cheated by the touts and conmen who harass them, and it is not often that any serious action can be taken against the violators. Stakeholders feel that it will be some time before the new step can make an impact on the ground level. All the same, it has been welcomed as another step to increase awareness on the importance of tourism.
