Delta Air Lines has announced plans for a major expansion of Gogo’s new fast in-flight Wi-Fi system across its fleet.
The new 2Ku connectivity system will be rolled out to more than 600 aircraft in the coming years, including the airline’s entire long-haul international fleet. Gogo’s 2Ku technology is said to provide “consistent, uninterrupted coverage nearly anywhere in the world, including over oceans”.
It offers more than 20 times the bandwidth of Gogo’s previous system, allowing passengers to stream videos. And later this year, Delta will launch IPTV, giving passengers the ability to watch live TV from their own devices on 2Ku-enabled aircraft.
“Delta customers have expressed an interest in their time in the air being as productive as their time on the ground, and 2Ku satellite offers a vastly upgraded in-flight Wi-Fi experience,” said Tim Mapes, Delta’s senior vice president & chief marketing officer. “By committing to more aircraft with 2Ku technology, we’re providing Delta customers with faster and more reliable in-flight connectivity as a part of Delta’s commitment to always delivering the industry’s best on-board services.”
Delta has already completed the installation of Ku-band satellite Wi-Fi on nearly all of its twin-aisle international fleet, including its Boeing 747, B767, B777 and Airbus A330 aircraft, as well as B757s operating on long-haul routes.
This roll out will be 100% complete by September 2016. The 2Ku service also will be offered on the airline’s new A350 and A330neo aircraft when they enter Delta’s fleet in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
2Ku installation has also commenced on Delta’s single-aisle fleet of B737 and A319 aircraft.
“With 2Ku, Delta will be able to deliver the best in-flight experience to its passengers wherever they fly around the world,” said Jon Cobin, executive vice president of Gogo’s global airline business group. “We know how important it is to Delta to bring this technology to passengers and we plan on getting it deployed on these aircraft as soon as possible.”
