Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has announced it is adding 15 new international routes for its Summer 2009 schedules, including service to 12 destinations not flown by any other US carrier, and expanded links from Tokyo’s Narita airport.
Delta’s long-haul expansion for 2009 will be focused in three regions:
* Trans-Pacific: Delta plans to add three new direct flights between the US and Tokyo-Narita, Japan, including new services from Salt Lake City and New York-JFK, a second daily flight from Atlanta, and daily service connecting customers from Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
* Africa: Delta will add new flights between Atlanta and Nairobi and Cape Town, (via Dakar); between Atlanta and Monrovia, Abuja, Luanda, Angola and Malabo, (all via Cape Verde Islands); and between New York-JFK and Lagos. Delta also will introduce its first direct daily service to South Africa with flights between Atlanta and Johannesburg.
* Europe/Middle East: Delta will launch direct flights operated to Gothenberg and Valencia, Spain, both from New York-JFK. It will launch direct services from JFK to Prague and Zurich (seasonal); as well as an addition of a second direct flight to Tel Aviv.
Glen Hauenstein, Executive Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, said; “In the current atmosphere of international financial uncertainty, the breadth of Delta’s network positions the airline to take advantage of markets that continue to thrive, while offering a natural hedge where there is economic softness.
“Through the merger, Delta is able to unleash the power of the Tokyo hub by connecting it to the largest US domestic network with new flights from Atlanta, New York and Salt Lake City feeding intra-Asian routes with greater trans-Pacific capacity.”
