Plans for a joint transatlantic venture between Delta and Virgin Atlantic have been given tentative approval from the US Department for Transportation (DOT).
US authorities said the tie-up could provide strong competition to the similar set-up by British Airways and American Airlines through oneworld.
If approved, Delta will be able to finalise a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic and the two will commence a commercial relationship on fares and schedules.
Delta purchased its stake in Virgin Atlantic from Singapore Airlines in December 2012.
