Online searches for UK Christmas getaways have hit an all-time high, breaking annual search records by 9.4%, according to search engine data analysed by last-minute cottage holiday hub, Snaptrip.com.
Google searches for “Christmas cottages” hit their highest point between 16th and 22nd October 2016, up 25% on the highest weeks of October 2015, and 11% higher than any previous week on record.
Overall, October and November search volumes showed a year-on-year increase of 7%, with the increase jumping to 29% in the week commencing 28th November.
Prior to this peak, search interest had been steady for three years, rarely increasing or falling by more than 4% during the week immediately before Christmas.
In contrast to this, searches for ‘German Christmas markets’ are down by 18% year-on-year, and ‘winter sun’ searches have dropped by 21% since 2013.
Matt Fox, CEO and co-founder of Snaptrip, said: “These kind of searches have been decreasing in popularity for several years, suggesting a move away from traditional winter escapes. Given the recent, sudden increase in searches for cottages, we can expect even more people to be searching for last-minute deals in the week running up to Christmas. We’ve already seen 390% more searches for Christmas dates than we had at this point last year, with Cornwall, Devon, Yorkshire, Snowdonia and Somerset proving most popular.”
