Nakheel and Spanish hospitality firm RIU Hotels & Resorts (RIU) have started development of the AED900 million, 800-room resort and waterpark at Deira Islands in Dubai.
The partners have appointed international consultancy firm Dar Al Handasah to oversee design, engineering and construction supervision of the resort, which will introduce the four-star all-inclusive concept to Dubai for the first time.
Nakheel and RIU signed their joint venture agreement for the project in Mallorca in February this year. A construction tender is expected to be released by the end of 2016, with anticipated completion in Q3 2019.
The resort will have four swimming pools, a kids’ club, and a spa and fitness centre. Dining facilities will include an all-day restaurant, a speciality restaurant, four beach eateries and an evening dining area with a stage for live shows and entertainment.
There will also be a mega waterpark occupying 10% of the resort.
The development aims to introduce a more affordable, family resort-style hotel to Dubai, in line with Dubai Tourism’s goals to boost visitor numbers to 20 million by 2020.
Infrastructure and coastal works are under way at Deira Islands, which will add 40 km, including 21 km of beachfront, to Dubai’s coastline. Nakheel is also developing Deira Mall and Deira Islands Night Souk, among other new attractions at the waterfront development.
