The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought greater powers for itself, in the wake of the Air India Express crash at Mangalore airport on 22 May. The DGCA has approached the Ministry of Civil Aviation to be given powers of police, along the lines of the USA’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), allowing it to prosecute airlines for any violations. At present, it has to make a legal case, which is time consuming and often leads only to minor fines, which are not deterrents to serious violations. Another plan is being considered however, which would form a separate body to investigate incidents, leaving the DGCA purely as the regulatory body for the industry.
