The recent surge in demand for domestic air travel in India continued in June 2015, with another month of double-digit growth.
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), India’s domestic passenger traffic jumped 16.3% during the month, when measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK).
This outpaced a 6.6% expansion of available seat capacity on Indian domestic routes, leading to a strong average passenger load factor of 84.5%.
To put India’s growth into perspective, the average global increase for domestic air traffic in June 2015 was 6.5%, and the world’s biggest domestic market, the US, saw a 4.9% increase. Even the fast-growing domestic aviation sector in China (+12.1%) couldn’t match India’s growth.
India has now registered double-digit year-on-year growth, in terms of RPK, for the 10 consecutive months, stretching back to September 2015.
