Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has urged international travellers to visit her country.
Ahead of the World Travel Market (WTM), which kicks off in London this week, Aung San Suu Kyi stressed that her country is open to visitors all-year-round, and that she will continue to develop tourism and social projects in the country as a means of raising living standards.
“There is so much that we need to do for our country. I don’t think that we can afford to wait,” she stated.
Her view was welcomed by May Myat Mon Win, chairman of Myanmar Tourism Marketing, who said that “now” means “basically any of the upcoming 12 months”.
“It’s a myth that Myanmar can only be visited during the dry season, especially the green season running from June till September is perfect to visit Myanmar,” she said.
Sustainable tourism is becoming an increasingly important sector in Myanmar. On Wednesday 9 November, new community tourism projects in Myanmar will be unveiled at WTM; the International Trade Centre (ITC) is working on a tourism project in Kayah state, along with several other community projects in “the dry zone”, which covers Mandalay and Shan state.
Myanmar’s Minister of Hotels & Tourism, U Ohn Maung, stressed that “more tourists coming to Myanmar and travel in a sustainable way will certainly benefit the country’s development.”
