Hong Kong clocked up 3.64 million visitor arrivals in May 2012 – 12.7% more than the same month last year.
The latest monthly double-digit rise continues the city’s strong tourism growth; so far in 2012 Hong Kong has now registered 18.7m arrivals, a year-on-year increase of 14.8%.
Once again the growth was driven by arrivals from mainland China, which surged 19.4% to 2.53m. This means that so far in 2012 mainland China has now contributed 13.1m visitors to Hong Kong – 69.9% of the city’s total.
The surge in traffic cross-Strait tourist traffic between mainland China and Taiwan however, has hit Taiwanese arrivals to Hong Kong. Taiwan contributed just 151,900 visitors to Hong Kong in May 2012 – 7.5% fewer than the same month last year.
