Double-digit growth for Indian arrivals

International visitor arrivals to India continue to increase at double-digit pace in 2016.
According to the latest data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism, 670,000 overseas travellers entered India in August, up 11.8% compared to the 599,000 achieved in the same month last year. International tourism revenues jumped 13.1% to INR129.03 billion (US$1.93bn).
Bangladesh accounted for the highest proportion of overseas arrivals to India in August (16.6% of the total), following by the US (12.6%) and UK (10.6%). These three countries were followed at a considerable distance by Sri Lanka (5.9%), Malaysia (3.4%), China (2.8%), Japan (2.8%), Canada (2.6%), Germany (2.6%) and France (2.5%).
The majority of international travellers to India entered through Delhi (28.4%) and Mumbai (17.3%) airports last month, followed by Chennai Airport (10.2%), the Haridaspur land border crossing from Bangladesh (9.1%) and Bengaluru Airport (6.8%).
For the first eight months of 2016, India has now welcomed a total of 5.59 million overseas travellers, up 10.2% year-on-year, and generated international tourism revenues in excess of INR1 trillion.
