Sydney has been shrouded in a cloud of red dust blown from the deserts of the outback, leading to flight disruptions and travel chaos across the city. Qantas said in a statement that all international flight arrivals at Sydney were diverted to Brisbane or Melbourne yesterday morning. Throughout the day passengers with “non-essential travel arrangements” were advised to reconsider their plans.
“While domestic services have recommenced, there will continue to be severe delays to all outbound domestic flights from Sydney Airport,” the carrier said. “Qantas aims to operate all international services also with delays.” It did not specify the exact number of flights or passengers affected.
The NSW city was blanketed by red dust after gale-force winds gathered up topsoil from the parched areas in the west of the state, before depositing the clouds across eastern regions, including Sydney.
