The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Christchurch will have to be demolished following the damage it sustained in the February earthquake. The hotel owner, Eureka Funds Management, told The Press yesterday that the hotel will not be rebuilt due to rising construction costs resulting from changes to the Christchurch building codes. The company is now working with IHG to redeploy the 160 staff, who have remained on full pay since the earthquake struck on 22 February. They now have the chance to work at other IHG hotels in New Zealand, Australia or further afield. All three IHG properties in Christchurch sustained damage in the quake. The group is determined to maintain a presence in the city, but IHG Australasia chief operating officer Bruce McKenzie said the future is still uncertain. “We’re working closely with the City of Christchurch, our partners and the industry to determine that future, with every intention of remaining a part of this city,” he said.
