International tourism arrivals to Egypt fell again in March as ongoing political tensions and violent attacks cause visitors to stay away.
A total of 755,000 tourists visited Egypt in March, marking a 32.4% decrease in arrivals compared to March 2013.
These results follow a fatal terror attack that killed three South Korean tourists and their driver on 16 February.
The group responsible has threatened further attacks, and as such the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued a terror alert for Egypt, and advised against all but essential travel to hazardous zones such as North Sinai, where the incident took place.
Tours are still running to Sharm el Sheikh, where enhanced security measures are in place to protect resorts.
The Egyptian military is situated in Sharm el Sheikh international airport, at check points around the perimeter of Sharm el Sheikh, and throughout the South Sinai Governorate. Routine security checks are being performed on entry into the airport and the police are carrying out vehicle checks in the resort region.
Ongoing unrest and terror attacks have taken a major toll on Egyptian tourism, which saw revenue fall by 41% last year to US$5.9bn.
