Virtuoso director: Career story and tips for securing that dream job in 2019

Has the ‘new year, new me’ mentality already started nagging you? After all, there is only one day left of 2018. To close out the year and prepare for the next, I spoke to Elsa Bacry, director of Europe, Middle East and Africa member partnerships, Virtuoso UK, about her background, passions – and how to get the hottest tips on how to get a dream job in 2019. Here’s what she said:

What was your background before you came to Virtuoso?

After university in Paris, with majors in management and marketing, I took a year off and travelled to Mexico and Central America, which made me realise I wanted to work in travel and travel for a living! After the trip, I found my dream first job in Paris and joined a Spanish tour operator specialising in Latin America.

I totally embraced the culture with the job and decided to move to South America, where I worked for travel agencies in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Back in Europe, I had the opportunity to work for Relais & Châteaux, and then moved from Paris to London to join Small Luxury Hotels of the World and later Kerzner International.

“Strong leadership and incredible human values”

How does your background help you in your role?

Travelling and living in different countries made me more open minded and flexible, which certainly helps in the role – and in life in general! After working for great Virtuoso partners, joining Virtuoso was the best thing that could happen to me.

Virtuoso is not only the most recognised network in the luxury travel industry, it’s also a company with strong leadership and incredible human values. It’s an honour to work for this organisation.

What challenges have you overcome in your career and how?

The main challenge of working in an international environment is to always adapt to different cultures and backgrounds. Communication is key and miscommunication happens!

This can be overcome by showing a genuine interest in other cultures, learning about them, and building a good understanding of different markets and ways of doing business.

For anyone looking to follow a similar career path to yours, what advice would you give them?

In hospitality we serve people, so we need to love them! Don’t be afraid to be real; we’re allowed to show our weaknesses and sometimes we can even turn them into strengths! And of course work hard, be patient and treat everyone with care and respect.

What should hopeful candidates include in any job application?

Be concise and include the key words from the job description. And if you truly believe you’re the best candidate for the role, say it!
