The Emirati high school students, from the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), departed to Houston to begin their week-long space training. The student training was organized by Space Ed-Ventures, an organization that caters to providing international based learning experiences to students focusing on technology and science. 25 students were selected out of 128 based on merit and their English fluency.
Hussain Al Ansari, CEO of Space Ed-Ventures said, “To be able to train like an astronaut and learn from real life experts creates a very interactive engaging experience that resonates. It is so important to build on what students learn in school. This type of training brings what students are learning to life.”
The students will be assigned a multitude of projects to work on and learn from. They will create and engineer robotic mars rovers to retrieve sample rocks for analysis. They will train as actual astronauts by visiting special astronaut training facilities. They will meet and learn from real-life experts, either astronauts or control room personnel, who have taken part in actual spaces missions. They will also be designing, creating, and launching a rocket. Finally, they will have to give a presentation that will be evaluated by their peers and by the Space Center Houston administration for presentation style and content knowledge.
