‘Engine surge’ forces Qantas B747 to land

A Boeing 747 operated by Qantas from Bangkok to London Heathrow early this morning experienced a surge in one of its four engines shortly after take-off. The pilot was forced to shut down that engine and return to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. A Qantas statement said that there was no safety issue at any stage, and that arrangements were being made to cater for the 335 passengers on board.
